This is the place where I work - Varbergs Kurort, beautifully situated by the sea in Varberg, 70 km south of Gothenberg, Sweden. This hotel and spa hosts the students of Drottning Blankas gymnasieskola.
Once (or twice, depending on which year of the education) a week the students of the health care programme come to Varbergs Kurort to study medicine, ergonomics and massage.

  1. This looks absolutely fantastic and I am sure your students woule really enjoy thier time there. When the health care students are at the hotel what sorts of things do they learn about and how are they taught?

  2. Yes, we have the impression that they enjoy it - at least they say that the "spa day" of the week is the best day! The classes I teach study medicine and ergonomics the first 3 hours before lunch, and massage techniques during the afternoon. The medicine course is directed towards knowledge about the musculoskeletal system since the students choose to become massage therapists or work with group training or personal training. They are taught by a combination of theory and practice, both on each other, the teachers and "real" customers in the Student Spa. The Student Spa is a clinic that offers massage treatments to a reduced price since the student are in training.

  3. You sound as though you teach very interesting courses. In Australia spa therapies are taught but only in a few places. A friend of mine teaches these in a Technical and Further Education College in South Australia and she had to do a lot of further study before she could teach in this area. We have public clinics too and they are attract quite a few customers.Do you have a lot of customers? How long does it take to complete this course?

  4. Wow Jenniann, this looks like a beautiful setting for a school. Referring to Ros's entry, there are not many places you can do this course here in Australia. What other subjects do they learn in this course?

  5. Yes, this is one of the few schools in Sweden where you can combine the health care programme with the spa and fitness area. The programme is three years of upper secondary education. The other courses are typical for the health care area, such as Health and ill-health, Disabilities, The human being, Psychiatry, Personal care and Occupational injuries. Of course they also study Swedish, Maths, English and so on. In order to choose for exemple to become a massage therapist the student has to make some individual choices within the programme.
And yes Ros, we have many customers at the spa - it's popular both because of the cheap price and for the good quality...

  6. Jenniann I am not sure that we have any schools or colleges that offer this kind of program. Health care and spa and fitness are a good combination of subjects. How much time in the school week would they spend on the VET part of their course?

  7. One or two days a week they come to the spa for lessons, but they also do 3-4 weeks a year with workplace practice! Yes, I too think it's a good combination, the student have plentyof different places to work after their education.
