Today we have visitors from a patience society for cergical stomas/ostomy.  There was 1 man and 2 women with cergical stomas. They told the students what deaseases they have had and how this effected there lives. They also talked about how fantastic it was that the cergical stomas had given them an opportunity to continue there lifes. 2 of the visitors had suffer from gastrointestinal canser and 1 of them had Crohn's disease. The students had an opportunity to ask quetions and look att different bandages.

  1. Guest speakers are great. When the students actually meet someone who is involved in what you have been trying to teach them, it makes it all fall into place for them.
We try to get as many guest speaker as we can. for different subjects. They are usually more than willing to promote their cause and educate the public.

  2. What a wonderful experience for your students and what a privilege to have people talking about their diseases and how they cope with them. This must be a very effective way to teach your students. Do you find this?

  3. We had 2 classes together at this time så the room was crowded. The students were very interested and listen to our visitors. To hear it from a patient is something else than hear the same thing from a teacher. Then I work as a nurse and have a student in practical education I often ask the patient to tell the student about their illness or disease.

  4. What a great approach you have. I really like the idea of having the patient explain to the student. It makes the patient feel respected and valued and the student would learn so much more.

  6. Respect as Donna says is very important and a hard thing to teach. Having real patients who have the courage to talk about their experiences is a real privilege for everyone. How did you go about organising this?

  8. Anna it must have been very important for everyone. It was wonderful that you all had the chance to listen to the stories. What sort of things did you discuss with the students after the talk?
